Bread and Roses Campaign

The Honourable Carolyn Bolivar-Getson, minister responsible for the Advisory Council on the Status of Women, launched the Bread and Roses Bursary Fund on March 6, 2009, to mark International Women's Day.

The term "Bread and Roses" comes from a 1911 marching song. Women marched for better working conditions. A well-known line is, "Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes; Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses!" At that time, women took the lead in fighting for fair wages, better work conditions, and equality for workers, no matter where they came from.

Nearly a century later, the Advisory Council is embracing the spirit of Bread and Roses -- to mark International Women's Day on March 8, to celebrate women's daily contributions to society through paid and unpaid work, and to highlight opportunities for women in well-paying fields such as the sciences, trades and technology.

The Nova Scotia Community College Foundation will manage the $20,000-fund, to benefit women studying sciences, trades, or technology, with particular consideration for women from diverse communities. Future events and gifts will support the growth of the Bread and Roses Bursary.
