The three-day program uses games, crafts, and creativity to tackle issues facing preteens such as body image, communication, bullying and self esteem. | 13 | Walk-On Session with the Senate Subcommittee on Cities Wednesday, August 13, 2008 from 4:15pm to 6:15pm Location: in Guild East Room, Holiday Inn Select Halifax Centre The Senate Subcommittee on Cities has set aside approximately two hours (4:15 – 6:15 p.m.) at the end of the hearing on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 in Guild East Room, Holiday Inn Select Halifax Centre, for members of the public to make brief statements. The Senators are especially interested in hearing from people with personal experience of poverty, lack of affordable housing and homelessness. | 18 | An Opportunity for Young Women! Gathering of Halifax Rebelles Monday, August 18, 2008 6:00pm Location: YWCA (1233 Barrington Street) Pan-Canadian Young Feminist Gathering, a taking place in Montreal on October 11, 12 and 13th. Organized by a Committee in Montreal, the Gathering will be a place for women-identified individuals between the ages of 14 and 35 to network, learn new skills, engage in dialogues with other feminists from across Canada, empower themselves and then bring all of this positive energy back to their home province. Everyone is invited to the first gathering of Halifax Rebelles, the local mobilizing body for this event. Taking place on Monday, August 18th at 6 pm at the YWCA (1233 Barrington) this first gathering will discuss ways to generate interest in the Gathering, ways to fundraise for the cost of travel to and from Montreal (accomodations and meals are provided, the cost of the Gathering is $1 for every $1000 made annually) and answer any questions people may have. If Halifax is not accessible to you or if you are unable to attend the meeting on Monday please email halifaxrebelles@gmail.com so you can discuss ways to organize in your community, have questions or want to get involved! | 3-5 | Democracy Shifting Shorelines: 34th Annual Conference of the Atlantic Provinces Political Science Association (APPSA) October 3 - 5, 2008 Location: Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia From Political Theory and Women, Gender and Politics, to Canadian Politics, Comparative Politics and International Relations, democracy as a specific and general problématique has motivated significant segments of the discipline. This year’s APPSA conference, hosted by the Department of Political Science, Saint Mary’s University, will explore these and other related themes and will figure as the signature academic event in the year long festivities commemorating the 250th anniversary of representative democracy in Nova Scotia. It will be co-sponsored by the Democracy 250 Committee of the Nova Scotia legislature and will provide an academic setting to reflect on the past, present and future of the democratic adventure. Planned events include two days of panels and roundtables. Conference dinner to be held at the Maritime Museum at the Atlantic on Halifax's waterfront. Scholars, practitioners, activists and students are invited to submit paper & panel proposals (500 word maximum) on the themes of democracy, representation, citizenship and governance. | 3-5 | Women’s Spiritual Journeys – Mi’kmaq and Christian October 3 (7:00pm) - 5, 2008 (1:00pm) This is going to be a weekend for women to gather and share faith journeys, and find support for living together with peace and justice. Participants will be guided by learnings from the Mi’kmaq traditional path and the Christian way as they share in talking circle tradition. This retreat offers an opportunity to build relationship and walk together with respect and friendship as First Nations and non-Aboriginal women. This decision was rendered after a lengthy legal and political struggle, known as the "Persons Case."
