/6/ CANADIAN INDEX OF WELLBEING
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The newly released report “How are Canadians REALLY doing?” shows that even in good economic times the lion’s share of benefits goes to the wealthy while the poor stay poor and the shrinking middle class struggles through.
The report also shows that Canadians are living longer but not healthier – health among teenagers is especially worrying; but crime is down and social relationships in our communities are stronger. It also argues that the cuts or lack of improvements to government programs like welfare, Employment Insurance and publicly funded medical services are hurting Canadians.

/7/ REPORT LAUNCHED: TEN+ YEARS LATER – WE ARE VISIBLE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There’s now an update to the 1996 report “We are Visible” which highlighted the experiences of health and health care of ethno-cultural/racialized women with disabilities in Toronto. “Ten + Years Later – We Are Visible: Ethno-cultural/racialized women with disabilities speak out about health care issues” updates the original research project. Through community-based research and a literature review, the project works to understand barriers to health and health care that ethno-cultural/racialized women with disabilities face and whether any progress has been made.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to tax return statistics for 2006 issued by the Canada Revenue Agency, women in this country make an average of 39.5 per cent less than men. This ranges from 18.3 per cent less for women under 20 to 49.3 per cent for women aged 60 to 64. Provincial numbers show a larger range.
The smallest difference was in Nova Scotia where women under 20 made 8.7 per cent less than men of the same age. The largest discrepancy was in Alberta where women aged 60 to 64 made 62.1 per cent less than men in the same age range. /10/ WOMEN IN VIEW 2010 CONFERENCE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Join a global celebration and dialogue on the art and impact of women in media. This conference will explore the impacts, negative and positive, for women of all cultural and economic backgrounds and nations as producers and consumers of media.
In the ‘70s and ‘80s, feminist creation, research and political action helped transform the participation of women in media production. Yet today women in media still struggle for equity in employment, the number of women in senior positions of influence is far from what many hoped for, and gender representation remains a complex and conflicted sphere.
WIV2010 invites proposals from media scholars, creators, policy-makers and industry leaders for papers, panels or workshops. Suggestions for topics: gender-related approaches to topics such as: labour, training and career-building; economics and restructuring of media industries; issues in youth-directed mass media; new directions in media creativity; socio-economic barriers to participation in production as audiences; and race, ethnicity, sexualities and representation.
Proposals should include a title, names and contact information of all participants, and an outline of 200 to 250 words. Technical requirements must be indicated. The deadline for submissions is October 30, 2009. For more information email visit www.womeninview.ca . Submissions can be emailed to Marsha Newbery, Conference Coordinator at mna45@sfu.ca .
