/3/ DECISIONS OF THE WOMEN’S COURT OF CANADA

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Court.ca announced recently that it will reproduce the decisions of the Women’s Court of Canada. In 2004 this group of feminist /equality Charter activists, lawyers, and academics, decided to do something about what they saw as the sorry state of equality jurisprudence under

Section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The solution? Rewrite the key decisions of the Supreme Court of Canada in this important area.

The first six judgments of the Women’s Court of Canada have now been published in Volume 18 of the Canadian Journal of Women and the Law. During the coming months TheCourt.ca will reproduce these judgments, providing them with a permanent online home.

/5/ NEW BRUNSWICK CHAPTER OF EQUAL VOICE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A new organization is forming in New Brunswick to reverse traditionally low numbers of women in politics. Currently, seven MLAs holdabout 12 per cent of the 55 seats in the legislature — whereas women make up 51 per cent of the province's population. The assembly has never had more than 20 per cent of its seats held by women.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Canada is marking the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child with the release of a report called “Aboriginal Children’s Health: Leaving No Child Behind -- the Canadian Supplement to State of the World’s Children 2009."

UNICEF Canada partnered with the National Collaborating Centre on Aboriginal Health to produce the report. It examines the health of Aboriginal children through the perspectives of national experts and analysis of existing data. The report concludes that health disparities among First Nations, Inuit and Métis children are one of the most significant children’s rights challenges facing our nation.
