Title: Executive Director
Organization:  Second Story Women’s Centre
Location: Lunenburg, Nova Scotia
Status: 32 hours weekly
Organization Profile: Second Story Women’s Centre is located in historic Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Our mission is to work to enhance women's lives by providing services and education designed to promote personal growth, community awareness, and social change. We work towards equality and respect within a women-centred environment and support women's rights to make their own decisions. We are seeking a dynamic, innovative and supportive feminist to become our new Executive Director.
Job Description:  The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organization according to the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors. Primary responsibilities will include leadership, operational planning and management, policy management, social action and advocacy, stakeholder relations, program planning and management, human resources planning and management, financial management, risk management and public relations. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors.

  • University degree in a related field

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Strong leadership, organization and management skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a consensus-based decision-making model
  • Strong advocacy skills and the ability to effectively represent the organization to a variety of stakeholders, funders, and the community
  • Knowledge of the history of feminism, intersectional feminist theory and practice
  • Knowledge of local and/or provincial resources and networks as they relate to the organization’s mission
  • Knowledge and experience with human resources management
  • Knowledge of financial management
  • Ability to think critically and independently
  • Proficient in the use of computer technologies

Experience:  5 or more years of progressive management experience within the non-profit or    public sectors

Personal characteristics - approachableflexible, ethical, innovative, reliable, diplomatic, collaborative, compassionate, enthusiastic, passionate about women’s issues

Work Conditions

  • The Executive Director works 32 hours a week (Monday to Friday), but may occasionally be required to work flexible hours on evenings or weekends to accommodate activities such as Board meetings, events hosted by the organization and representing the organization at public events.
  • Salary is commensurate with the salaries of other women-serving non-profit organizations in the province. A benefits package is available, which includes medical.
  • Start Date is projected to be mid-June 2017.
