Save the Date: One Billion Rising: Creating Art to End Gender-Based Violence

Save the date! Second Story Women’s Centre (www.secstory.com), Be the Peace Institute (www.bethepeaceinstitute.ca) and community partners are excited to let you know that we will be joining One Billion Rising’s global movement again in 2018! On March 8 - International Women’s Day - we will be hosting an incredible event to stand in solidarity with survivors across the world and to create a new kind of consciousness about the roots of gender-based violence.

One Billion Rising (www.onebillionrising.org) is a global movement to end violence against women and the biggest mass action that has happened in human history. The campaign is based on the fact that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, that adds up to more than one billion women and girls. Hence the name!

We are currently inviting diverse artists to create or to facilitate the creation of art that will bring a perspective to the nature and experience of gender-based violence, and/or the factors that are associated with it – patriarchal culture, racism, colonialism, economic and political inequity, trans/homophobia, ableism, ageism etc.  Any medium will be considered.

Art that is created will be exhibited at the Lunenburg School of the Arts in Lunenburg on International Women’s Day. The event will consist of an exhibition of visual art during the day, followed by a “Meet and Mingle” with artists at the end of the day, and a line-up of speakers and performances in the evening.

If you are interested in becoming involved as an artist, please go to www.bethepeaceinstitute.ca  and click on “Guidelines”.  If you need space to conduct a workshop, we may be able to help with that, as well as with a small amount of funding for materials. If you need support in understanding the complex issue of gender-based violence, we can help with resources or a presentation.
